Car Accident – ICBC Insurance
Car Accident – ICBC Insurance
Don't miss out on 12 weeks of pre-approved treatment from ICBC.
Enhanced Accident Benefits help you access the medical services you’ll need to recover immediately. We may bill ICBC directly.
After a car accident, various symptoms appear. In particular, strains or sprains, which account for most of the symptoms, are not well revealed through X-ray examination. The impact of a car accident is different from a typical bruise. As the impact is transmitted directly or indirectly through the vehicle, people complain of headaches, temporomandibular joint, neck, shoulder, back, and even knee and leg pain caused by concussion.
If you do not receive proper treatment within 12 weeks, the golden time after a car accident, you may suffer from various pains in your daily life due to various ‘traffic aftereffects’.
Enhanced Accident Benefits help you access the medical services you’ll need to recover immediately.
ICBC Claim
After a traffic accident is reported to ICBC, each person is given a unique ICBC claim number. All you need is an ICBC claim number to start treatment right away.
Getting medical care and treatment after a crash
If you’ve been in a crash, you may need medical care. Enhanced Accident Benefits help you access the services you’ll need to recover, no matter who is responsible (at fault) in the crash.
Important: Simply being in an accident does not automatically qualify you for treatment. After a traffic accident is reported to ICBC, you must specifically open an ‘Injury Claim’ to receive a unique ICBC claim number. All you need is this Injury Claim number to start treatment right away.
For the first 12 weeks after your crash, you can get treatment with the following health care practitioners for the number of treatments below:
What if I need more treatment after 12 weeks? If you have not fully recovered after the initial 12 weeks, your treatment does not have to stop. Your practitioner can submit a treatment extension request to ICBC on your behalf. Once approved by your ICBC adjuster, your care can seamlessly continue.

5 Steps to Getting Better
Because traffic aftereffects can be complex, a medical professional — not ICBC — diagnoses the injury. Please do not self-diagnose your symptoms.
With over 25 years of clinical experience, Dr. Hoseon Song and our multidisciplinary team have developed a coordinated recovery sequence to ensure you get the best possible care for your injuries:
-
Digital X-Ray: To accurately assess structural alignment.
-
Chiropractic Care: To restore spinal mobility and nerve function.
-
Registered Massage Therapy (RMT): To release severe muscle tension.
-
Acupuncture: To naturally reduce pain and stimulate healing.
-
Kinesiology (Active Rehab): To rebuild physical strength and function.
Frequently asked questions
ICBC Q&A
What is a minor injury?
Under B.C. law, a minor injury may include sprains, strains, cuts, bruises, road rash, pain syndromes, and certain psychological or psychiatric conditions that do not result in incapacity. It can also include a TMJ disorder, and certain whiplash-associated disorders. A medical professional — not ICBC — diagnoses the injury.
Can the person who caused the accident still receive treatment?
Yes. Under ICBC’s Enhanced Care model, B.C. residents injured in a crash can access care and recovery benefits regardless of who was responsible for the accident.
Can I still receive benefits after a minor crash?
Yes. If you were injured in a crash, you may still be eligible for care and recovery benefits under Enhanced Care, even if the injury is considered minor.
What if I am unable to work after a crash?
If your injuries prevent you from working, you may be eligible for ICBC income replacement benefits. Coverage can begin on the eighth day after the crash and is generally based on 90% of your net income, minus eligible amounts payable from other sources.
Do I need to replace my child car seat or booster seat after a crash?
After a moderate or severe crash, child car seats and booster seats should be replaced.
Can ICBC reimburse the cost of replacing a child car seat or booster seat?
Yes. If your child car seat or booster seat needs to be replaced because of a crash, you can apply to ICBC for reimbursement.
Is it important to secure my pet while driving?
Yes. ICBC recommends properly restraining pets in the vehicle. Keeping your pet secured helps prevent distraction while driving and may reduce the risk of your pet being injured, escaping, or being thrown forward during a crash.
Why does ICBC recommend securing pets in the vehicle?
A loose pet can distract the driver and increase crash risk. ICBC notes that driver distraction is a leading cause of car crashes in B.C..
Can I start treatment right away after reporting my claim?
In many cases, yes. Under Enhanced Care, pre-approved treatments are available during the first 12 weeks after a crash once you have an ICBC claim number, so patients often do not need to wait to begin approved care.
