Chiropractic Care for Children & Adolescents
The bone structure of children and teenagers are underdeveloped compared to those of an adult. Maintaining prolonged postures for long durations can add a lot of stress to the spine and joints, which is a more serious problem than one may think. Ongoing stress can have harmful effects which can quickly begin producing problems.
These days, many children spend the majority of their leisure time sitting at a desk on the computer, watching television on the couch, or on their phones with their neck and back slouched and curved. Sitting in improper positions for a long time not only interferes with the growth of the child, but with their concentration levels at home and at school. If these symptoms are left unattended, children can develop chronic pain at an early age which will make daily activities difficult.
It should be top priority for parents to help children get the medical care they need during this critical phase where children are growing and developing habits. Regular treatments can help guide your child in the right direction to better posture to prevent pain as adults.
Teens and children naturally heal faster than adults. Starting treatment earlier and regular maintenance will reduce the number of treatments required to see long term results into adulthood.
Posture Adjustment Care
Teens spend a lot of time in front of desks while studying or on the computer. We can commonly see teens sitting in postures like in the picture above for hours at a time. This can cause stress responses like vertebral subluxations, which means that the spinal vertebrae become misaligned and cause disturbances in the nervous system.
Bad habits (such as “twisting” or “cracking” their own back or neck), if left unattended, will very often produce symptoms ranging from uncomfortableness to migraines to extreme pains in the neck and lower back that make daily activities and concentration difficult.
A chiropractor’s assessment and diagnosis will help pinpoint where the pain is originating from, and develop a treatment plan to prevent the condition from worsening. Chiropractic does not mask the pain, and rather directly treats the cause of the pain. We strongly encourage parents to bring in their child in to discontinue the habits that cause bad posture and help them along in their development and growth process.
Scoliosis is a medical condition that causes a person’s spine to curve sideways. Severe cases of scoliosis will show obvious asymmetry in the appearance of the person’ body such as uneven level of shoulders, hips, waist, and protruding ribs. Complications include chronic back and lower back pain.
The cause of scoliosis is unknown, but it may be due to neurological abnormalities or injuries to the spine. Scoliosis can run in families. In most cases, the shape of the curvature begins to appear in adolescence around 12 to 14 years of age.
Regular chiropractic care to monitor your child’s musculoskeletal health will help discover scoliosis at its earliest stage to begin treating it as soon as possible. If you believe that your child’s shoulders or pelvis is unleveled, we recommend bringing your child to see a chiropractor to detect the early stages of scoliosis.
